Rendering and Finishing

The finishing of a mudbrick house is as paramount as the finishing of an automobile.

This being the case as in all house finishing one has to consider the best options for the final beautifying of their house.

When it comes to rendering either internally or externally there are options.

Two of those options are the traditional cow manure and earth render, or a cement based render.

When using either of these options there are several ways of preparing not only the surface but also the protection of timber from mud cement or water stains.

As stated before and any tradesperson would tell you; seventy five percent of this process is preparation.

Drop sheets, plastic sheeting, paint brushes, and sweeping brush heads are all needed for this cause.

Further a choice of render earth or sands is to be considered. When taking the next step after rendering it is also wise to use some form of dust sealer and colouring agent if wanted. I would personally recommend the use of Grimes & Sons ColourCoats and Water Repellants.

Painting and Staining

The protection of timber throughout ones house is the most important factor when it comes to having to replace timber particularly external timber. Today’s prices of timber would make any responsible house owner very aware of the reasons for maintaining ones timber. Personally I lean towards the use of acrylic wood stains both externally and internally.

However, the use of natural products such as linseed oil based wood stains are still certainly an option, as are varnishes and eurothanes. In my experience the painting and rendering have to be coordinated so as not to clash, this comes down to common sense, in other words paint your ceilings before you finish your rendering.  Again I would recommend the use of Grimes & Sons Wood Stains and Paints.
